Through the story-telling magic of the songs of ABBA, MAMMA MIA introduces us to Donna, a feisty, independent single-parent who doesn’t need a man to make her life complete, and her twenty-year old daughter Sophie, who wants romance, babies, and a big white wedding. If only her father could give her away….if only her mother could tell her who her father is! Sophie finds the names of three men who could possibly be her father in her mom’s old diary, so to make her dream wedding a reality, she invites all three to the big day. Sun, sea, sex, and subterfuge are the backdrop to this tale of the women who wanted to have it all and the girls who want happily ever after.
Donna Sheridan (around late 30s to late 40s)- Mother of a 20 year old. A free spirited former lead singer in a group called “Donna and the Dynamos” who now owns and runs a hotel on a Greek island. She’s strong, but still zany with a vulnerable side. Mezzo-soprano/alto with some dance experience.
Sophie Sheridan (18 to 20s)- Donna’s daughter who was raised on the island and carries her mother’s wild spirit. She dreams of romance and adventure in the world beyond, but first, her big wedding. Pop soprano with strong belt and dance experience.
Tanya (late 30s to 40s)- Donna’s friend and former bandmate. She’s dry and witty with a taste for the sophisticated life. Mezzo-soprano with some dance experience preferred.
Rosie (late 30s to 40s)- Also a former “Dynamo” with Donna and Tanya, but now runs and writes for a feminist press. Confident and determined, the life of the party, she is fiercely loyal. Alto and comic actress.
Sam (30s to 40s)- possibly Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago to because he was engaged to another woman, now a successful single architect with a deep love for the island and regret for what he did to Donna. Baritone.
Bill (30s to 40s)- possibly Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no strings to tie him down, ready for any adventure that comes. Baritone
Harry (30s to 40s)- possibly Sophie’s father. A buttoned-up, reserved financier trying to reconnect with his former free-spirit on what’s now the adventure of his life. High baritone/tenor.
Sky (20s)- Sophie’s fiancé who has given up his blossoming business career to fix up Donna’s taverna and marry Sophie. Tenor
Pepper (20s)- Sky’s friend who works for Donna when he isn’t busy flirting. Baritone/Tenor with dance experience.
Eddy (20s)- Another of Sky’s friends and Donna’s staff, but much more easy-going.
Lisa & Ali (18-20s)- Sophie’s high energy best friends who’ve come to the island to be her bridesmaids and help her deal with the mess this day is becoming.
Also, a large ensemble who can create strong, textured characters with a full range of strong male and female voices and strong dance skills.
